About Partner Visa (Subclasses 820 and 801)

This visa allows an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen to live in Australia with his or her partner or spouse. You apply for both the temporary and permanent partner visas at the same time. To be eligible for this visa you must be in a genuine relationship with your spouse or de facto partner.

Partner Visa (Permanent)

This visa lets the de facto partner or spouse of an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen live in Australia permanently. It is usually only for people who currently hold a temporary Partner visa (subclass 820).

Partner visa (Temporary)

This visa lets the de facto partner or spouse of an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen live in Australia temporarily. Getting this visa is the first step towards a permanent Partner visa (subclass 801).

Requirements for eligibilty:

  • You must be in Australia when you apply

  • Married or in a de facto relationship unless exempt with Australian Citizen, Australian Permanent resident

  • The relationship is genuine and continuing

  • Meet Certain Health and Character requirements
